The architectural style will be complimented by the rich landscape and biome of the Cape winelands. The two architectural typologies presented complement the region and heritage while allowing the architect freedom for unique expression.
STYLE 1 – Winelands
A contemporary take on typical “Winelands or Karoo” architecture with special design considerations on form, space and materials make it a contemporary throwback to buildings of the countryside. The modest farm- and shed-style typology aims to inspire a familiar but captivating architecture. The base form is to be primarily stereotomic with openings carved into the façades, closed off with a tectonic structure.
The use of vernacular and local materials for masonry and stonework with mainly plastered or bagged wall finishes. A “gluelime” motif is to be entertained by using new technology paints and primers. Colours to be considered carefully. Timber pergolas and shading elements to soften the building and filter the sunlight are. The building’s orientation, position, and form should be designed to respond to the environmental and climatic conditions of the site, including both passive and active methods.
A new term that combines the typology of the Winelands with remarkable, tasteful forms and rich materials. This style offers an opportunity for architects and designers to push the boundaries of contemporary design.
“Finelands” architecture is a playful term suggestive of an aesthetic that can sprout from the idea of style 1, with less restrictions. This style would grant clients and architects the opportunity to design something truly unique to the context of the Estate and surrounding area. The architect will have full discretion to interpret a style suitable for the region.
Although this style offers less restrictions than the Winelands style, it will be regulated by an open-minded review committee who understand the impact tasteful contemporary architecture can have in a community.
