The Mount Royal story started when local resident Andre Halvorsen facilitated a transaction that included land owned by well-known farmer Mr. Jopie de Kock of the farm De Grendel and the Swartland Municipality with Gerry Rehrl, a Cape-based Property Developer who shared the vision to develop a residential estate incorporating the Malmesbury golf course and the natural environment to create a new development zone for Malmesbury.

The Swartland Municipality approved the development rights in November 2005 to establish Mount Royal Golf and Country Estate as a residential security estate, a business zone, the upgrading of the Malmesbury golf course to an 18-hole facility, and the establishment of a Renosterveld Conservation Reserve to protect the famous indigenous Renosterveld habitation and bird life.

Despite the highs and lows in the property market, Gerry Rehrl with the commitment and hard work of the Swartland Municipality and many professionals, contractors and other role players, established all the bulk infrastructure facilities, management offices and gatehouse, security fence of 6,5 km and completed the servicing of the first 303 stands in phase 1 of the project.

Local Winelands Developers, River Leaf Investments have now taken the baton from Gerry Rehrl to complete the remaining phases of some 423 potential new stands and homes as well as the development of a newly planned country club which will incorporate the 18 hole golf course, mountain bike trail, outdoor sport facilities and multi-purpose clubhouse, restaurant, children’s play area… and more.

Malmesbury is one of the leading and most progressive towns in the Western Cape as rated one of the best municipalities for several years.

The double dual N 7 highway connecting Cape Town with the West Coast makes Mount Royal Golf and Country Estate a mere 40 minutes drive to Cape Town and Stellenbosch, Paarl and several West Coast seaside destinations.

Malmesbury has well developed and maintained infrastructure, schools and other public facilities, a new regional shopping mall, De Swartland Werf and Private Hospital currently being developed by the Devmark Group and a future satellite campus for the University of Stellenbosch
