Located in the heart of The West of the island, the smart city of the Medine Group captivates with the beauty of its surroundings.
Situated close to beaches and mountains, it offers breathtaking views of the Flic-en-Flac lagoon, stunning sunsets, and the majestic mountain ranges of the region. The city is constantly enriched with new assets, new educational partnerships, as well as new commercial projects launching this year.
It is possible to live, work, have fun, and learn all in one region! Cascavelle promises a living environment where everything has been designed for the well-being of its residents, encouraging soft mobility, ensuring architectural coherence, and preserving over 30% of green spaces. More than 8000 endemic and fruit trees will be planted on the roads, while tiny forests will be integrated throughout the area.
While its existing developments demonstrate Medine’s commitment to thoughtful and planned development, several key projects will inject new energy into the region:
- Under the auspices of the Uniciti International Education Hub, new tertiary institutions are being added to the current educational offerings, particularly in key areas such as computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering, healthcare, business administration, and digital marketing.
- Cascavelle Shopping Mall is set to triple its size. The expansion will solidify its position as the region’s unmissable one-stop shop. New local and international shops, including a new Mr. Bricolage store scheduled for April, as well as new leisure and dining offerings, will enrich the mall’s experience.
- To meet healthcare needs, the Medine Group is investing in the construction of an ultra-modern private hospital in Cascavelle. With 111 beds, it will offer exclusive care in Mauritius. Construction will begin in the second quarter of this year.
Smart thinking: A green, sustainable smart city
Based on a 2016 inventory of the site’s landscape features, a smart strategy was drawn up by the master planners. They incorporated the existing green network in the design of the smart city by using natural water bodies, preserving the existing ecological corridors and creating a well-connected grid of parks and squares, and pedestrian and cycle paths. A sustainable rainwater management strategy is implemented within the city. Based on natural solutions, it minimises the impact on the environment, whereby the traditional concrete ducts are replaced by open swales along all the road corridors.
Medine smart city embraces a multifaceted approach to the design and development of its city through the Placemaking concept, by focusing on the effective ways to strengthen the connection between people and the places they live in.
With 26 kilometres of cycling and pedestrian paths, the smart city brings people together through a safe, efficient and sustainable transport network that encourages clean transportation. This network links the city along beautifully designed green corridors and well-thought-out green spaces, enabling people to easily commute to and through their mixed-use neighbourhoods.
