When you’re flying you can be forgiven for being a bit envious of the first-class passengers on board as they enjoy their champagne on tap, flat bed and free toiletries.
However, for many travellers first class plane tickets are still out of reach with some airlines charging over $10,000 (R169,740*) for a long haul one-way ticket.
But gaining an upgrade to first class for free is still possible. Here is a list of things you can do to improve your chances.
1. Join the loyalty scheme

Several airlines have a loyalty programme that you can sign up to. If you’re a frequent flyer then you’ll earn points and miles which, once racked up, can be redeemable for free flights, upgrades and hotel stays.
Some of the best frequent flyer programmes include Miles & More by the Lufthansa group, Flying Blue by KLM and Air France and Miles&Smiles (Turkish Airlines).
According to a times.co.uk report, execs racking up more than 80,000km a year are more likely to enjoy upgrades, but it’s also possible for new frequent flyer members to enjoy an upgrade if they’ve just joined. Make sure to mention that you’ve just signed up at the check in desk.
Just don’t count on getting an upgrade if you’ve already booked the cheapest seat. While you may have saved yourself some money in the process it’s unlikely to boost your chances of an upgrade
2. Be friendly to check in staff
If you’re not a frequent flyer or don’t intend on joining a loyalty programme your next best bet is to go on the charm offensive with check in staff. We’re not saying you should compliment their uniform colour, but a little bit of friendliness could go a long way.
Get to the airport early or check in last minute (if you are happy to take this risk) as that could improve your chances of an upgrade.
Start by asking if the flight is busy or tell them that you’d prefer a window seat or need extra space as you’re tall. Be direct, but polite, and ask check in staff if there’s a chance of an upgrade – sometimes airlines overbook a flight and upgrade a few from economy class. The worst they could say is “no” and then you’ll just be in the same position you are now.
You may have more sway if you’ve been inconvenienced in some way. Perhaps your flight has been delayed or your baggage has been lost.
An alternative trick is to tell the staff about a special occasion (if you’re celebrating one) like your birthday or wedding anniversary.
3. Dress to impress
It’s not a guarantee of getting you an upgrade but it will certainly boost your chances if you’re dressed in a smart outfit as opposed to your tracksuit and trainers. So, make sure you look the part if you’re keen for an upgrade.
4. Travel during busy times
If you’re travelling during the school holidays, there’s a chance that you could get upgraded, particularly if you volunteer to be bumped to the next flight. You could strike a deal whereby you’re upgraded if you agree to this. It does, however, require a degree of flexibility on your part. If you don’t have to be at your destination at a specific time you can try and use this tactic.
5. Travel alone
Another way to boost your chances of getting an upgrade is to fly solo. ‘It’s unlikely airlines will want to lose out on money to upgrade a large group, so are more likely to offer a free first-class ticket to individuals. Alongside this, seating in first class is often limited, meaning there is less chance of a group of seats becoming available,’ say travel experts at Forbes Advisor.
