Greens and blues are going to be popular choices next year. The Dulux Colour of the Year for 2022 has been revealed as ‘Bright Skies’. It’s described by the paint manufacturer as ‘an airy and fresh tone’ that opens and breathes new life into any space.
‘With the mood of the moment still reflecting the irregularity of the last 18 months, the use colour as an expression will continue to diverge across two paths. You’ll find people using colour to create harmonious, pared-back settings that blur the lines between inside and outside, where you’ll find plenty of blues and greens fusing our deep connection to nature and our need for comfort and familiarity.
‘Alternatively, people will harass colour in bright and bold ways, for cheerful and uncomplicated spaces that inspire creativity and promote sentiments of spontaneity. An opportunity to do something differently tying in with the feeling of re-emergence and normality,’ says Karen Steyn an interior designer from The Home Studio.
6 Tips to find the right paint colour
It’s so easy to make the wrong colour-choice and repainting a wall can take effort. To avoid the hassle of covering over a colour choice mistake, follow these handy tips:
- Always colour swatch. Steyn recommends doing this even for white exterior paints. ‘This gives you the added benefit of time to stand back and consider your choice and will to help you visualise the final effect, before making a final colour decision,’ she explains.
- Decide on the feeling you want to create. ‘Whether a room is large or small, the right colour depends on application. When considering a colour for a room, you need to first focus on the feeling you are looking to create in that room. Do you want a bright and happy space? Do you want to create an intimate moody setting? Once you know what you are looking to achieve, you then focus on colour choices to bring that feeling to life,’ says Steyn.
- Consider the colour of the contents in your room. If you’re stuck on colour inspirations, you should work with what you already have, such as the colour of your cushions, furniture, or a painting.
- Use accent colour. An accent colour can help to join up your spaces and even add personality and joy into a dull space.
- Get inspired. If you’re still stuck, Pinterest is a great app to consult for colour inspiration.
- Choose a theme: It doesn’t mean you have to paint the entire house the same colour, but it can help to tie the entire house together. To break up any bland colours don’t forget to use an accent colour or why not create a feature wall?
