Mauritius is offering long term visas for remote workers who wish to relocate to the beautiful island. With more than just the stunning scenery on offer, here we unpack what the visa is, how easy it is to apply, and the chances of success…

What is the Premium Visa and how does it work?

Mauritius’ Premium Visa offers individuals the chance to reside on the island for a maximum period of one year as a tourist, retiree, or professional willing to work remotely. It is a renewable visa required for those wishing to stay over 180 days.

Non-citizens and their families can carry out their business overseas via the visa, with their main place of business needing to be outside of Mauritius. To qualify, the applicant must have proof of their long stay plans and should not enter the Mauritius labour market.

How easy is it to apply?

The application process is a simple one – apply online. There are specific things needed to complete the form successfully, including a valid passport, a copy of any air tickets, and a valid email address – the full list can be found on the official site.

However, accommodation both prior- and post-quarantine needs to be pre-booked, alongside travel and health insurance for the length of stay needing to be acquired prior to arrival. Proof of funds to meet the cost of living is also a requirement and can be provided in the form of a bank statement or an employment contract. It is therefore recommended that the application is submitted well in advance of the departure date.

Once the form is completed, the visa will be issued as an e-visa via email. It will be processed within 48 hours, or on the next working day if submitted over the weekend.

What are the chances of success?

So far, 2,000 applications for the Premium Visa have been approved and the island has also seen overall tourism stays increase. Other countries, such as Barbados and Dubai, have launched similar successful visas in recent years, but with slight differences.

When debating whether working remotely abroad is the right path for you, ensure that all aspects are considered. Talking to your employer before committing to the move is vital, as well as considering how it will impact your personal life.

What are the overall pros and cons?

Mauritius’ Premium Visa has its pros and cons.

Moving away from home and settling abroad can be stressful. Perhaps the biggest challenge of all is to remember it is not a vacation. What’s more if you lose your overseas based job there may not be anything local to fall back on. While the visa is renewable after a year, one also must bear in mind that the renewal is not guaranteed.

There are, however, benefits too. The opportunity of seeking out a new lifestyle – and a stunning one at that – doesn’t come around every day. Some suggest that a change of scenery improves work ethic, with the freedom and flexibility of remote working being the most appealing aspect.

Whilst work may play a big role during your time in Mauritius, there are also numerous experiences to be had outside this, and by moving here you may find a new sense of happiness. By opening your mind to a new culture, the world really is your oyster.
