Why is it necessary to (still) secure your home when you live in an estate?

Living on an estate is sometimes like living in a bubble. All that perimeter security removes us from the ugly reality of life beyond it. But the truth is that we can’t escape it completely, so here are some reasons why it is still necessary to secure your home when you live in an estate.

Casual crime

Casual or unplanned crimes are so easy to commit when there is no security on anyone’s doors or windows. That expensive cell phone on the table can be pocketed by simply reaching through the open window. The same applies to a wallet left on a kitchen counter or entrance hall table.

The perpetrators could be wayward teenagers that live on the estate; casual daily workers; people on site doing alterations or building new homes; or syndicates that rent a property on an estate with the sole purpose of stealing from neighbouring properties before they move on to the next estate.

Trellidor franchises are all too familiar with these scenarios as they are often called in after these incidents to find a security solution to prevent them happening again.

“Crime levels in estates are obviously much lower than anywhere else, but they definitely still occur. We have had reports of a ‘cat burglar’ living on an estate in Johannesburg that was hard to apprehend. He was a drug addict looking for small items to sell,” said Peter Rawson, Marketing and Sales Director of Trellidor.

Elsewhere, there have been instances of people returning home to find their garages cleaned out or empty spaces instead of expensive TV sets.

Pesky primates

Along the coast or in close proximity to nature reserves there are other reasons for installing security in estate homes. Monkeys, baboons, snakes, mosquitoes and other wildlife can make it difficult to keep doors and windows open.

“We have some excellent security solutions for this type of problem on estates. Products like Clear Guard and Security Shutter are designed to comply with estate rules about security on doors and windows. They don’t look like conventional security barriers and so they don’t clash with estate rules,” said Peter.

Clear Guard is a framed mesh screen that is custom-made for doors and windows of any type. The screen blocks out wildlife as well as harsh UV-rays and heat. It is a strong security barrier that keeps people out too.

Security Shutter looks like an elegant louvre shutter window treatment but has internal strengthening features and excellent locks that elevate them to the level of ‘security barrier’ without losing their good looks.

“These two products are part of our Lifestyle Range and they’re perfect for these situations. We understand that estate homes don’t require heavy duty security solutions. But they do need something on doors and windows to supplement the perimeter protection provided by the estate. Our Trellidor franchises provide expert advice on how to do this within the parameters of estate requirements,” said Peter.
