Purchase products directly from Colas, South Africa pioneering road surfacing company, and take control of the estates road maintenance.

Colas has developed and adapted products, that are affordable, aesthetically pleasing, and durable for community living spaces. These products enable estates to maintain their roads at a much lower cost, addressing low-grade road issues like cracks and potholes and preventing long-term damage.

More about our products and services

Colas is a global leader in the development of new surfacing technology as well as a supplier of a wide range of unique solutions.

With a legacy of firsts, from inventing path-breaking bitumen emulsion processes in 1929 to inventing the world’s first photovoltaic road surfacing in 2015, Colas is always at the forefront of innovation.

Colas offers a range of products and services to support flexible pavement needs during its life cycle. Our construction and maintenance services include binder delivery, asphalt milling and paving, chip and spray sealing, microsurfacing, enrichment treatments, crack sealing and line marking. Our support services range from slurry mix and chip seal design to testing of materials. Colas has the capability to manage surfacing construction projects, long-term maintenance and asset management contracts.

Integrated operations help us to maintain and deliver the highest standards of quality, throughout the value chain. The company’s ISO 9001 certification means that its customers are assured of a consistent level of quality at all its production facilities.

Our strategically placed storage facilities mean that we are able to meet high levels of demand, at short notice and during periods of planned and unplanned refinery shutdowns.

Logistical options include bulk road tankers, bitutainers, drummed bitumen and hot bulk shipments, which we deliver to several countries on the continent, from our factories in Durban and Cape Town or distribution depots in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, East London, Port Elizabeth and Hectorspruit.

Outside of South Africa, we have factories in Namibia, Zambia and Kenya.

Safety, at work and on the road, has always been one of Colas’ major concerns: any business that cares about its human capital has a duty to actively look out for the physical safety of its employees. We therefore expend substantial effort to protect the health and safety of our people as well as the environment around us.

Unparalleled quality, cost-wise technical solutions and long-term performance set us apart from others. We have worked with some large-scale clients including the City of Tshwane, eThekwini Municipality, the City of Cape Town, Mogale City and Mbombela (Nelspruit).

In Mogale City, we sprayed a section of road with our Colmat solution. The road network had an envisaged lifespan of five years, but is still performing well after 15 years.

How can we help your residential community?

The road network within an estate has a functional and aesthetic value, and both directly influence the overall perceived value of properties in the estate.

Residential estates are often large in scale, and so it is important to carry out preventative maintenance on asphalt roads to significantly improve the lifespan of the surface as well as reduce the cost of major repair work. If left unchecked, the roads might deteriorate to a point where the only option is to resurface them entirely, which can be very costly and time consuming, and will inconvenience residents.

Our team of experts fully understands how to increase longevity, and budget for road maintenance in a residential estate. We have introduced a range of alternative products and solutions that specifically solve a number of issues that arise in residential estates, such as crack sealing, pothole patching, asphalt rejuvenation and micro surfacing.

A good example is the surface rejuvenation we did at the Blair Athol Golf and Equestrian Estate in Gauteng. The product is a rubberised, mineral-filled bitumen emulsion prepared from a refined grade of penetration-grade bitumen. It arrives on site in the form of a soft paste that is then diluted with water prior to application.

The mineral fillers and additives present in the compound improve binder stiffness, reduce tackiness and allow efficient sealing of small hairline cracks. After application, it dries to a rich, matt black colour within approximately two hours, making it ideal for residential estates, private driveways or parking lots.

One application will rejuvenate an asphalt surface, coating it with a fresh layer, and depositing bitumen into fine cracks and voids. The surface texture is not affected and the result is an effective rejuvenating seal that extends the lifespan of the road and gives a new look to the asphalt surface.

When working in an estate, we start by doing an on-site assessment of the internal road network, taking the proposed maintenance plan or schedule for the next few years into account. We then create a proposal for maintenance and rejuvenation tailored to the individual estate and offer on-site troubleshooting and advice throughout the process.

A major challenge in a residential estate is not allowing the black bitumen that we use on the surface to contaminate driveways or curbs. Our products dry very quickly, are easy to use and tend to require manual application to improve accuracy.

Another challenge is the effect that our product application has on the surrounding environment. At any given time, estates like Blair Athol will have a variety of indigenous flora and fauna, natural waterways and game, horses and small animals, birds and pets on site.

Protecting and conserving the environment is very important to us. Our skilled staff are careful with our application and work in a clean and tidy manner. We protect property driveways with a hessian cloth to keep them clean, and manage our whole process so that we have minimum impact on the environment around us.

Developers and estate managers should never underestimate the value of a good road network. Aesthetically, it makes a big difference to the overall look and feel of an estate when the roads are in good condition and have an enriched colour. In addition, good and long-lasting road surfaces that can withstand extreme weather conditions and reduce potholes are a sound investment for any residential estate.
